Micro Insurance Academy enters Ashoka's Changemakers Competition online

The Micro Insurance Academy has entered Ashoka's Changemakers online challenge, “Banking on Social Change: Seeking Financial Solutions for All.” This is a global competition that aims to unearth the most innovative and cutting-edge methods that allow financial security to become a reality for everyone. By being part of this competition, we have an opportunity to get the word out about the power of community-based micro insurance schemes, and to invite others to join our work.

Inaugural Issue of "Micro Insurance Voices" Released!

A year ago, to the day, the Micro Insurance Academy (MIA) officially inaugurated its operation in New Delhi, India.  Today, as we celebrate one year of successful operations, we are pleased to announce the release of the first edition of our quarterly newsletter "Micro Insurance Voices".

MIA Chairman gives key note speech at the 2nd Asian Conference on Microinsurance

The Micro Insurance Academy’s Chairman, David Dror, and Honorable Minister Oscar Fernandes provided the key note addresses at this year’s 2nd Asian Conference on Microinsurance “Microinsurance: Regulating Insurance for the Masses” held July 23 & 24 in Mumbai.

Following the success of last year’s reinsurance school, the Micro Insurance Academy will hold the “2nd Reinsurance School for Microinsurance Schemes” on 15-17 October 2008 at the India International Centre in New Delhi, India.

The Reinsurance School is designed for managers of community based micro insurance schemes, micro insurance promoters and managers of NGOs & MFIs contemplating launching their own micro insurance scheme.

Orissa communities unite with the Micro Insurance Academy (MIA) & Madhyam Foundation to develop community-based health insurance

This July, the Madhyam Foundation and the Micro Insurance Academy (MIA) conducted a workshop to launch an exciting new project to bring micro health insurance to poor communities in the state of Orissa, India.

Micro Insurance Academy and Save the Children conduct workshop in Nepal with local stakeholders

The Micro Insurance Academy (MIA) and Save the Children met in Kathmandu July 14-16 to conduct a workshop with local NGOs on community based micro insurance. The three day workshop included presentations on the current state of health care provision in Nepal, the advantages of community based health insurance, the sustainability of the micro insurance schemes, and steps for moving forward.

MIA & Cooperative Development Foundation (CDF) join hands to promote micro health insurance (May 2008)

In May of this year, the Cooperative Development Foundation (CDF) and Micro Insurance Academy conducted a Promoter Training exercise as part of an exciting new project to bring micro health insurance to poor communities in and around Warangal City, Andra Pradesh, India.

This event took place as a result of an earlier MIA-facilitated Initiation Workshop in which CDF and a number of self-help groups/cooperatives which it supports, agreed to add health insurance to its existing mutual life insurance offerings available since 2000.

New 2008 evidence-based publication on the cost of illness in India (April 2008)

The Micro Insurance Academy publishes the results of a new study detailing the costs associated with out-of-pocket-spending by poor households across five locations in India.

Background & Objectives: In India, health services are funded largely through out-of-pocket spending (OOPS). The objective of this article is to provide data on the cost of an illness episode and parameters affecting cost.

The MIA and its partners create a consortium to elaborate effective health insurance packages (March 2008)

The Micro Insurance Academy and its partners Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Indian Institute of Health Management and Research, and the National Institutes of Health (USA), come together form a consortium to upscale demand for health insurance among grassroots groups in India.

This program, known as WOTRO, addresses the critical unresolved social challenge of healthcare financing in India by identifying an optimum match between clients’ needs for healthcare, available supply of healthcare and demand for healthcare.

The Micro Insurance Academy forms strategic alliances to promote micro health insurance in South Asia (March 2008)

Save the Children (U.S.) and the Micro Insurance Academy have formed a strategic alliance to introduce microinsurance to resource-poor communities in Nepal.

This recently formed consortium with Save the Children seeks private insurers and reinsurers to serve as socially responsible 3rd party contributors, who in return will acquire a solid understanding of the business process surrounding microinsurance along with valuable technical expertise that can be applied to schemes elsewhere.
